Industry Landscape

A neutral matrix of inference runtimes, agent frameworks, managed agent platforms, gateways, workflow systems, protocols, observability, and isolation.

The landscape is organized by architectural responsibility, not a vendor ranking. Inclusion is not endorsement, and the matrix avoids unsupported feature or performance comparisons.

Category Examples Contribution Not equivalent to MIR because…
Inference runtimes and servers ONNX Runtime, vLLM Model execution, scheduling, hardware abstraction They do not define complete task authority, approvals, recovery, or evidence.
Managed agent platforms AWS AgentCore, Google enterprise agent platform Hosted agent execution and platform controls They are vendor implementations, not the category definition itself.
Protocols MCP, A2A Tool/context and agent-to-agent interoperability Communication does not establish policy, lifecycle, or trust.
Observability OpenTelemetry Traces, metrics, logs, semantic conventions Operational telemetry is only one part of user-facing evidence.
Workflow and orchestration Durable workflow engines, agent frameworks State transitions, retries, agent patterns MIR adds AI-specific context, authority, side-effect, and evidence controls.

How status is labeled

  • Production implementation: documented software available for operational use.
  • Vendor implementation: a sourced provider-specific platform.
  • Published specification: an interoperability document, which may still evolve.
  • Research prototype: a paper or experiment, not assumed production-ready.
  • MiRuntime perspective: original editorial synthesis.

Evaluation questions

  • Which state and evidence remain portable if the provider changes?
  • Can tools be governed independently of prompts and models?
  • How are long-running runs paused, resumed, recovered, and terminated?
  • Are memory and evidence exportable, correctable, and deletable?
  • Which claims are current documentation versus roadmap or research?
